Baccarat is one of the simpler casino table games to learn because players do not make decisions such as hitting, standing or drawing additional cards. Instead, you choose which outcome to back – Player, Banker or Tie – and the cards are then dealt according to predetermined baccarat rules.

The simplicity can be deceptive, however. Banker commission, third-card rules, side bets and different baccarat variants can affect the mathematics significantly. This beginner’s guide explains how baccarat works, what the main bets mean and what UK players should understand before joining a live or online baccarat table.

🎲 Baccarat Is Mostly About Choosing the Bet

Once betting closes, Player and Banker hands are dealt according to fixed drawing rules. You do not decide whether either hand receives another card.

What Is Baccarat?

Baccarat is a comparing-card game built around two hands called Player and Banker.

Before the cards are dealt, players generally bet on one of three main outcomes:

👤 Player
You are betting that the Player hand finishes closer to 9 than the Banker hand.
đŸĻ Banker
You are betting that the Banker hand finishes closer to 9.
🤝 Tie
You are betting that both hands finish on the same point total.

The words Player and Banker are simply names for the two hands. Betting on Player does not mean you are betting on yourself, and betting on Banker does not mean you are betting on the casino.

Baccarat Card Values

Baccarat uses a simple point system.

Card Baccarat Value
Ace 1 point
2-9 Face value
10, Jack, Queen, King 0 points

Only the final digit of the total matters.

7 + 2 = 9
The hand totals 9.
8 + 7 = 15
Only the final digit counts, so the hand totals 5.
King + 6 = 6
The King is worth zero, leaving a total of 6.

The highest possible baccarat total is therefore 9.

How a Baccarat Round Works

A standard baccarat round follows a largely automatic sequence.

1. Place Your Bet
Choose Player, Banker, Tie or an available side bet.
2. Two Hands Are Dealt
Player and Banker normally receive two cards each initially.
3. Drawing Rules Apply
A third card may be drawn automatically according to the game’s rules.
4. Closest to 9 Wins
The final Player and Banker totals are compared.

The bettor does not choose whether to draw another card. This distinguishes baccarat from blackjack, where the player’s decisions can directly influence the hand.

What Is a Natural 8 or 9?

If the first two cards of either hand total 8 or 9, the result is normally called a natural.

In standard baccarat, this usually ends the drawing process immediately.

🃏 Example

If Player receives a 5 and a 4, the total is 9. That is a natural 9 and no additional Player card is required under standard rules.

Baccarat Third-Card Rules Explained

The third-card rules are often the part that makes baccarat look complicated to beginners.

The important point is that you do not need to memorise them in order to play. The dealer or software applies them automatically.

Player Third-Card Rule

As a general rule, after checking for naturals:

  • Player normally draws with a total of 0-5;
  • Player normally stands on 6 or 7;
  • a natural 8 or 9 ends normal drawing.

Banker Third-Card Rule

The Banker rule is more detailed because it can depend on both the Banker’s current total and the value of any third card drawn by Player.

This creates the impression that the Banker is making a strategic decision, but it is not. The outcome is governed by predefined rules.

💡 Beginners Do Not Need to Make Drawing Decisions

You choose your wager before the round. The Player and Banker drawing rules are then handled automatically by the table or game software.

Player Bet vs Banker Bet

The Player and Banker bets are the two principal baccarat wagers.

👤 Player Bet
The bet wins when the Player hand finishes closer to 9. Standard winning Player bets commonly pay 1:1.
đŸĻ Banker Bet
The bet wins when the Banker hand finishes closer to 9. Traditional baccarat commonly applies a commission to winning Banker bets because the Banker outcome has a small mathematical advantage.

âš ī¸ Check the Table’s Banker Rules

Not every baccarat variant uses the traditional 5% commission structure. No-commission and alternative payout versions can change the house edge and payout rules.

Why the Banker Bet Has a Lower House Edge

Under standard baccarat rules, the Banker’s drawing rules give the Banker hand a slight statistical advantage over Player.

That advantage is why traditional baccarat usually charges commission on winning Banker bets.

Main Bet Typical Characteristic General House Edge
Banker Commission commonly applies Typically lowest of the three main bets
Player Usually pays 1:1 Slightly higher than Banker
Tie Higher headline payout Usually substantially higher

The exact percentages can vary with the baccarat variant and payout rules, which is why checking the specific table information matters.

How the Tie Bet Works

The Tie bet wins when Player and Banker finish with the same total.

It usually offers a much larger payout than Player or Banker because ties occur less frequently.

đŸŽ¯ Higher Payout Does Not Mean Better Value

The Tie bet may look attractive because of its larger advertised payout, but standard Tie bets generally carry a substantially higher house edge than Player or Banker.

If a standard Player or Banker wager ends in a Tie, the handling of the original stake depends on the game rules, but it is commonly returned rather than treated as a normal losing wager.

Baccarat Side Bets

Modern live baccarat tables can offer numerous optional side bets.

Examples may include:

Player Pair
Pays when the Player’s first two cards form a qualifying pair.
Banker Pair
Pays when the Banker’s initial cards meet the pair conditions.
Perfect Pair
Uses more specific matching-card conditions depending on the table.
Other Side Bets
Providers can offer additional outcome-specific wagers with separate payouts.

Side bets often have a different – and frequently larger – house edge than the primary Player and Banker wagers.

The size of a side-bet payout therefore tells you very little on its own about mathematical value.

Does Baccarat Have a Strategy?

Baccarat strategy is fundamentally different from blackjack strategy.

Because the drawing rules are automatic, there is no decision tree involving hitting, standing, splitting or doubling.

The main choices are instead:

  • which bet to place;
  • which baccarat variant to play;
  • whether to use side bets;
  • how much to stake;
  • how long to continue playing.

From a mathematical perspective, choosing wagers with lower house edges is more meaningful than trying to predict whether Player or Banker is about to begin a winning streak.

Do Baccarat Trends and Scoreboards Predict the Next Hand?

Live baccarat tables frequently display scoreboards showing previous Player, Banker and Tie results.

These displays can include patterns commonly known as roads.

They are useful for recording previous outcomes, but previous results do not create a reliable prediction of the next independent hand.

âš ī¸ A Winning Streak Does Not Make Another Win Due

Five consecutive Banker wins do not mean Banker must continue winning, nor do they mean Player is now due. Historical sequences should not be treated as predictive signals.

This is one of the biggest corrections to the old version of this article: following a trend is not a mathematical baccarat strategy.

Live Baccarat vs RNG Baccarat

Online casinos can offer baccarat in both live dealer and software-based forms.

đŸŽĨ Live Baccarat

  • real dealer;
  • physical cards;
  • live video stream;
  • visible game procedure;
  • generally slower round pace.
đŸ’ģ RNG Baccarat

  • software-generated results;
  • digital cards;
  • faster rounds;
  • available without waiting for a dealer;
  • same basic baccarat concept.

Neither format is automatically better simply because it uses physical cards or software. The game rules, operator and regulatory environment matter more.

No-Commission Baccarat

Not every baccarat table charges the traditional commission on winning Banker bets.

No-commission baccarat modifies the payout structure instead.

For example, a particular Banker result may pay less than the standard 1:1 amount or be treated differently under that variant’s rules.

🔎 No Commission Does Not Mean No House Edge

Removing a visible commission normally requires another mathematical adjustment to the game. Check the payout table rather than assuming a no-commission version is automatically more favourable.

Common Baccarat Mistakes Beginners Make

Chasing Patterns
Treating previous Player or Banker results as predictions.
Ignoring Commission
Comparing payouts without checking how Banker wins are settled.
Overusing Side Bets
Focusing on large headline payouts without checking house edge.
Increasing Stakes After Losses
Trying to recover previous losses through progressively larger bets.

Betting systems cannot remove baccarat’s mathematical house advantage.

How to Choose a Baccarat Table

Do not choose a live baccarat table only because the studio or dealer looks appealing.

Check:

  • minimum and maximum stakes;
  • Banker commission rules;
  • Player and Banker payouts;
  • Tie payout;
  • available side bets;
  • whether it is standard or no-commission baccarat;
  • game speed;
  • table limits;
  • provider and studio;
  • mobile interface where relevant.

Two tables labelled simply as “Baccarat” can therefore have meaningfully different payout structures.

Baccarat and Responsible Gambling

Baccarat’s simple betting interface and relatively rapid rounds can make it easy to place many wagers in a short period.

A lower house edge does not make a casino game risk-free and does not prevent substantial short-term losses.

đŸ›Ąī¸ Set the Budget Before the First Hand

Choose an affordable spending limit and avoid increasing stakes simply because Player or Banker appears to be on a streak or because you want to recover previous losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is baccarat easy for beginners?

Yes. The player’s main decision is normally which outcome to bet on. Card drawing is handled automatically according to predetermined baccarat rules.

What is the aim of baccarat?

The Player and Banker hands are compared, and the hand finishing closest to a total of 9 wins. Bettors choose which result they expect before the cards are dealt.

What is the best main bet in baccarat mathematically?

Under traditional baccarat rules, the Banker wager generally has the lowest house edge of the three main bets, although commission normally applies to winning Banker bets.

Why does the Banker bet charge commission?

The Banker’s drawing rules give that hand a small statistical advantage under standard baccarat rules. Traditional commission helps compensate for that mathematical difference.

Is the Tie bet a good baccarat bet?

It normally offers a larger payout, but standard Tie bets also tend to carry a substantially higher house edge than Player or Banker.

Do I need to learn baccarat third-card rules?

No. Understanding them can help you understand the game, but the dealer or software automatically applies the Player and Banker drawing rules.

Can baccarat scoreboards predict the next hand?

No. Scoreboards display historical outcomes, but previous Player, Banker or Tie results do not reliably predict what the next hand will produce.

What is the difference between live and RNG baccarat?

Live baccarat uses real dealers and physical cards streamed in real time, while RNG baccarat generates outcomes through casino game software. Both use the same basic Player-versus-Banker concept.
